viaSport releases first recipient list for Professional Development Fund for Advancing Gender Equity in Sport

Vancouver, BC – Twelve BC women are the first recipients of viaSport’s new Professional Development Fund for Advancing Gender Equity in Sport. Each will have the opportunity to build her leadership skills by attending a course, conference or alternative training program.

“The Province of British Columbia is committed to ensuring that women and girls who participate in sport have a great experience,” says Coralee Oakes, Minister of Community, Sport and Cultural Development. “This new fund will help give their leaders and role models the tools and knowledge to deliver on this.”

Managed by viaSport and financially supported by the Province of BC, this grant is part of a larger strategy to lead the BC sport sector in creating an inclusive space for all individuals.

“We are proud to be leading a progressive sport culture here in British Columbia by providing resources and opportunities to support continued professional development in the area of gender equity,” says viaSport CEO Cathy Priestner Allinger. “It is inspiring to see the strong interest in the program and know that these recipients will continue to be advocates for equitable sport opportunities in their own communities.”

Grant recipients will attend a number of exciting conferences, including the Women and Sport Conference (Quebec), the International Physical Literacy Conference (Vancouver), the 3rd annual Aboriginal Physical Activity Conference (Cape Breton) and the 2015 PASO-COPAC Softball Coaching Conference (Cloverdale).
