Countdown to BC Games kicks off with Olympic Day
Nov 23, 2017
More than 1,500 elementary school-aged children in Kamloops were given the opportunity to try over 15 different sports, including ski jumping, biathlon, bobsleigh, curling, judo and wheelchair basketball during Olympic Day 2017 on November 23. Sports they may never have known they had an interest in or passion for.
Globally, Olympic Day is celebrated by thousands of individuals and groups worldwide. Olympic Day calls to action the need to adopt and maintain healthy active lifestyles while living the Olympic values: excellence, respect, leadership, fairness, fun, human development and peace. It is not about developing Olympians; rather, Olympic Day is about about inspiring kids to be active and have fun while engaging in sport with friends.
Yesterday’s Olympic Day also marked 100 days to the BC Winter Games taking place in Kamloops and Sun Peaks this coming February. The occasion was celebrated with a mock torch relay and cauldron lighting with eight Olympians and Paralympians participating in the relay with children. The Olympic and community spirit in the room during this portion of the day was incredible.
At its heart, sport is about having fun, learning new activities, trying hard, teamwork and friendship. the atmosphere and energy felt at the Tournament Capital Centre during Olympic Day in Kamloops definitely highlighted how all kids should experience sport.
