Sport is one of the strongest engines for fostering individual health and wellbeing, creating belonging and growth, and building community. Level the Field, launched today, is a registered charity that works to support increased access to high-quality sport experiences across BC. Level the Field is committed to working to help ensure no one is left on the sidelines.
Inequity in sport participation is a systemic issue. Its impact is disproportionally felt by lower income and racialized families, women and girls, newcomers, Indigenous communities, persons with disabilities, and 2SLGBTQIA+. BC’s amateur sport system needs more resources, stronger partnerships and sector-wide collaboration to address barriers to access and provide safe, high quality sport experiences to more British Columbians.
“Sport is essential to the wellbeing and social fabric of British Columbia. Amateur sport is a facilitator and a powerful lever of social change. It contributes to the social and economic health of communities and individuals in all corners of the province,” said Andrew Price, CEO of viaSport BC. “Level The Field strengthens social cohesion, inclusivity and safety by increasing access to sport, especially for those who face the greatest barriers to entry.”
Level The Field collaborates with partners across BC, both inside and outside of sport, to remove barriers to sport experiences for those who need it most. It generates revenue through charitable fundraising and public donation campaigns and partners with corporations and foundations to advance its work. It builds capacity within sport organizations and addresses systemic barriers to inclusion through education, training, and inclusive program design.
British Columbians can donate to Level the Field at www.levelthefield.ca. All donations are tax-deductible and will directly support programs that expand sport access for equity-deserving individuals across the province, making it more accessible and welcoming.
