BC Ferries Programs Reach Record High in Supporting Amateur Sport

Sep 10, 2024

This summer has marked a milestone for BC Ferries’ grant programs — The BC Ferries Sport Experience Program and the BC Ferries Disability Sport Experience Program.

From July through September 2024, the programs have seen their busiest and most impactful quarter, providing crucial financial relief for athletes, coaches, and officials travelling for sporting events.

viaSport issued approximately 4,000 ferry vouchers valued at around $65,000. These vouchers have played a significant role in easing the travel burden for participants and staff associated with a range of high-profile events, including:

  • Baseball BC Provincial Championships
  • BC Athletics Junior Development Track & Field Championships
  • BC Golf Provincial Championships
  • BC Lacrosse Minor Provincial Championships
  • BC Soccer Provincial Championships
  • BC Ultimate Championships: Junior
  • Boccia Provincial Championships
  • Minor Box Lacrosse Provincial Championships
  • Western Canadian Softball Championships

The BC Ferries Sport Experience Program aims to alleviate travel costs for amateur sport organizations and their athletes, while the BC Ferries Disability Sport Experience Program is specifically designed to reduce travel barriers for athletes with disabilities.

Several organizations have expressed their gratitude for the support:

  • Port Moody Curling Juniors (PMJC) commented, “The grant helped to offset the costs associated with travelling and participating in a provincial championship.”
  • Island Swimming Club emphasized how crucial the assistance was in achieving their goals, “This program was able to support our team fundraising efforts.”

As BC Ferries continues to support sports across the province, the positive impact of these grant programs is evident in the success stories and appreciation shared by athletes and organizations alike.
