Sep 10, 2024

The Province of BC has supported the purchase of adaptive sport equipment and the training of coaches and officials to contribute to the delivery of Invictus Games Vancouver Whistler 2025.

Administered by viaSport, with a $250,000 contribution by the Ministry of Tourism, Arts, Culture and Sport, the Adaptive Sport Grant was designed to help sport organizations grow inclusive sport participation and to create a legacy for sport in BC.

“Reducing barriers so people of all abilities have the opportunity to participate in sport is essential to create an inclusive sport sector and inclusive communities,” says Lana Popham, Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture and Sport.

“BC is a proud host of the Invictus Games Vancouver Whistler 2025, and we look forward to welcoming competitors as they continue their healing journey and embrace the power of sport.”

The Adaptive Sport Grant supported fourteen organizations with funding ranging from $10,000 to $30,000. The funding will be used to help reduce barriers and to improve accessibility in sport by offering training and development programs for coaches and officials, as well as the purchase of adaptive sport equipment, such as sit skis and sport wheelchairs.

“Interest in adaptive sport is growing fast, and so is the demand for specialized equipment and additional coach training to help athletes play and compete,” says Charlene Krepiakevich, CEO, viaSport British Columbia. “Through these grants, we can open more doors to people in adaptive sport, a true and lasting
legacy from the 2025 Invictus Games.”

The Ministry of Municipal Affairs Community Gaming Grant program also provided nearly $500,000 in additional funding for adaptive sport equipment that will be owned by the sport organizations and loaned to the Invictus Games. With viaSport’s assistance, eight Designated Provincial and Disability sport organizations applied for and received funding through the annual sport sector intake.

“Through this generous funding, we can ensure that the necessary equipment and training is in place to help stage the best possible Invictus Games Vancouver Whistler 2025,” says Robyn McVicker, Chief Operating Officer and Deputy CEO, Invictus Games Vancouver Whistler 2025. “And we could not be prouder that this financial support will provide an enduring legacy for so many long after the Games have concluded.”

The Invictus Games is a prestigious international event that enlists adaptive sport to help competitors recover from illness or injuries they sustained through military service to their country. Invictus Games Vancouver Whistler 2025 will be held from February 8 – 16, 2025. These events inspire everyone to participate and discover the healing power of sport, which supports physical, mental, and social well-being.
