BC Ferries Grants Help Athletes Travel to Key Events This Fall
Dec 20, 2024
This fall, BC Ferries’ Sport Experience Program and Disability Sport Experience Program had another impactful quarter. From October through December 2024, viaSport distributed approximately 1,500 ferry vouchers, totaling around $25,000 in support. These vouchers helped ease the travel burden for athletes, coaches, managers, and officials travelling to and from the island for various sporting events.
The primary events supported by the program this fall included:
- BC Wheelchair Basketball Tournament – Kamloops
- BC Wheelchair Rugby Junior Camp
- 2025 Skate Canada BC/YT Super Series Sectionals
- BC Cross Country Championships
- BCPFA Provincial Championship
- Age Grade Finals 2024
- Canadian BMX Grand Nationals
The BC Ferries Sport Experience Program helps to reduce travel costs for amateur sport organizations and their athletes, while the BC Ferries Disability Sport Experience Program specifically addresses the unique travel barriers faced by athletes with disabilities. Both programs play a vital role in ensuring athletes and teams have the support they need to compete and succeed.
As always, the feedback from organizations has been overwhelmingly positive. Here are just a few of the many grateful responses:
Greater Victoria BMX: “So many of our local families benefited from this program. Ensuring our athletes get to this event helps keep the sport alive and pushes our athletes to compete at a higher level.”
Valley Sturgeon Lacrosse Club: “The grant saved our non-profit team a large amount of money. We were able to provide financial relief to coaches travelling with the team as well. Our team brought home a bronze medal.”
As BC Ferries continues to support sport across the province, the positive impact of these grants is evident. The program is not only helping individual athletes, but also enabling coaches and teams to travel, compete, and thrive.
