BC Ferries Program Supports Travel to Break Down Barriers to Sport

Dec 15, 2025

Two unique grant programs are making a difference to sport participation in BC: the BC Ferries Sport Experience Program and the BC Ferries Disability Sport Experience Program. Travel is an essential part of sport competition, but for many athletes, it can also be a significant barrier, especially when it comes to cost and accessibility.

Whether it’s crossing the waters between Vancouver Island and the mainland or traveling to tournaments across the province, these programs make participation more accessible. These initiatives ease the financial burden of travel for eligible athletes, coaches, officials, and sport organization staff across British Columbia.

“Travel is a big part of competitive sport in British Columbia. For many athletes, especially those in smaller or more remote communities, it can also be one of the biggest barriers to participation. We are proud to partner with viaSport to help reduce some of those challenges. BC Ferries plays an important role in connecting communities, and programs like this help ensure more young people can take part in the sports and experiences that strengthen those connections,” says the Manager of BC Ferries Community Investment Team.

The BC Ferries Sport Experience Program supports amateur sport organizations by covering ferry fares for athletes and teams attending competitions, while the BC Ferries Disability Sport Experience Program specifically assists athletes with disabilities, helping to reduce travel-related barriers and supporting inclusive participation in sport.

Over the past three months program uptake has been steady. From October to December, a total of 1,315 ferry vouchers were distributed, supporting 827 participants in 17 different sports. These numbers include 300 vouchers for disability sport programs, supporting 130 participants. Since October, the programs have supported a wide range of events — from international competitions to provincial tournaments. Here are just a few highlights:

  • Canada Soccer’s 2025 National Championships – U-17 Cup
  • Western Canada Cup for Cross Country
  • 2026 BC U20 Curling Championships
  • Football BC Championships

Two grateful recipients shared their appreciation:

“I was so excited when I received this email that we’d be able to offer some island youth the chance to attend the Have-a-Go Day … and want to say many Maarsii (thank you). We are grateful this was approved!” – Coordinator, Métis Nation BC

“We are truly grateful for this support, and it will help reduce financial barriers to travelling to the Island.” – Representative, Fraser Valley Wheelchair Sports

These programs continue to play a vital role in ensuring that sport is accessible to all, helping remove financial barriers for travel on the coastal ferry system.
