BC Ferries Helps Break Down Barriers to Sport Travel in BC
Oct 30, 2025
Travel is an essential part of sport competition, but for many athletes, it can also be a significant barrier, especially when it comes to cost and accessibility. To address this challenge, two unique grant programs are making a difference: the BC Ferries Sport Experience Program and the BC Ferries Disability Sport Experience Program.
These initiatives are designed to ease the financial burden of travel for eligible athletes, coaches, officials, and sport organization staff across British Columbia. Whether it’s crossing the waters between Vancouver Island and the mainland or traveling to tournaments across the province, these programs make participation more accessible.
The BC Ferries Sport Experience Program supports amateur sport organizations by covering ferry fares for athletes and teams attending competitions, while, the BC Ferries Disability Sport Experience Program specifically assists athletes with disabilities, helping to reduce travel-related barriers and promote inclusive participation in sport.
This past summer was one of the busiest on record for both programs. A total of 2,687 ferry vouchers were distributed, supporting 2,578 participants across 139 events in 25 different sports. This quarter, the programs have supported a wide range of events — from international competitions to provincial tournaments. Here are just a few highlights:
- 2025 Canada Cup International Softball Championship
- Equestrian Canada National Dressage Championship
- BCLA Minor Box Lacrosse Provincial Championships
- 2025 Bowls Canada Para Championships
One grateful recipient from the BC Wheelchair Basketball Junior Tournament shared their appreciation:
“Thank you so much. This takes a huge weight off our shoulders.”
These programs continue to play a vital role in ensuring that sport is accessible to all, helping remove financial barriers for travel on the coastal ferry system.
