Commit to Kids Child Protection Training

Jul 17, 2023

We all want kids to have the best possible experience in sport—where they feel safe, supported, and excited to participate. The Commit to Kids program helps child-serving organizations reduce the risk of sexual abuse and create safer environments for children in their care.

This training is required for Board Directors and Executive Directors / CEOs of viaSport Designated Sport Organizations, and access is available to them through viaSport at no cost. As per the Annual Contribution Agreement, all Designated Sport Organizations are required to have their Board Directors and Executive Director / CEO complete Commit to Kids (C2K) online training.

The program’s tools provide organizations with information on the issue of child sexual abuse which forms the basis for educated policies and procedures — from hiring and screening to reporting and staff training. This enables all employees and volunteers throughout an organization to uphold standards of conduct that protect children and youth in their care by focusing on healthy interaction between adults and children.

Requirements for viaSport Designated Sport Organizations

New Board Directors or Executive Directors / CEOs must complete this requirement by March 31. People who have taken the training before are not required to retake it. An exemption can be issued if someone is unable to complete the training due to past trauma or accessibility issues.

Use of licenses:

  • viaSport will pay for licenses for all Board and full-time staff if requested
  • Licenses for temporary staff or club representatives can be requested, but the cost will be the responsibility of the sport organization.
  • Unused licenses at the end of the year will be charged back to the organization ($7.50 per license)

Your organization is responsible for tracking who has been issued an access code (license), who has completed the training, and any exemptions.  Please note that the licenses expire after one year.

Requests will be compiled from this form and sent to the Canadian Centre for Child Protection once each quarter, on the following dates:

  • End of January
  • End of May
  • End of July
  • End of October

Following these submission dates, the Canadian Centre for Child Protection will process your request and will email you when the licenses are available. Please note: Due to capacity constraints, this can take 1-3 weeks.

  • Make informed decisions about policy, staffing, and resources
  • Understand how past harm can affect participants of any age
  • Respond confidently if concerns arise

Safe, informed leadership supports positive experiences for everyone.

Yes — the Commit to Kids for Coaches: Foundational Information for Safeguarding Children from Sexual Abuse is a free, shorter version offered by the Canadian Centre for Child Protection.

  • Price: Free.
  • Content: Covers the scope of child sexual abuse, barriers to disclosure, grooming and boundary transgressions, and how adults in sport can help safeguard children.
  • Upon completion (and passing a short quiz at 100%), users receive a record of participation.
  • Note: It is designed as a foundational awareness course, not the full comprehensive training required for board directors/executive leadership.

How to use it:

  • Recommend or require this foundational course for club volunteers, part-time staff, referees, or other supporting roles as part of your organization’s workforce.
  • Use it as a minimum standard of awareness training, while reserving the full-length version (≈3 hours) for Board, senior leadership and full-time staff.
  • Track who has completed it and consider it part of your broader safe-participation system — though it does not replace the full course in cases where the full version is mandated.
