With the start of 2024, be the best you by starting your amateur sport journey!

Getting involved with sport is a great way to improve physical, mental, and emotional well-being. Engaging in consistent physical activity will not only help improve your own long-term health, but also help you find community, build meaningful friendships, and positively shape the course of your life on and off the field.

The amateur sport landscape in British Columbia is vibrant and diverse, with many opportunities for participants of all ages and skill levels to engage in a wide range of sports. At viaSport, we work in collaboration with amateur sport organizations and the Ministry of Tourism, Arts, Culture and Sport to #MakeSportBetter. We developed our viaSport Designation Program to set specific minimum standards for Provincial Sport Organizations in BC to ensure that sport opportunities are inclusive, safe, welcoming, and accessible.

Throughout January, we’ll be highlighting the importance and benefits of maintaining physical activity and an active lifestyle through our #YearOfYou campaign. Stay in the loop through our social media channels on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter & LinkedIn to read participant stories, learn more about physical literacy, and find ways to make 2024 the #YearOfYou through sport.

What is Physical Literacy?

Physical literacy is not just about being physically active: it’s understanding and appreciating movement and the benefits of activity. It involves developing the knowledge, skills, and confidence to make physical activity enjoyable for life.

Physical Literacy Resources for Everyone

At viaSport BC, we work in partnership and collaboration with many organizations that emphasize the importance of creating more opportunities for inclusive, safe, welcoming, and accessible sport. Below, we have compiled some resources from organizations we work alongside that share the importance of understanding Physical Literacy for the foundation of lifelong physical and mental health:

Appetite To Play promotes and encourages Physical Literacy for parents of children in the early years (birth to 5 years old) by providing many valuable and practical resources that promote and encourage Physical Literacy.

Physical and Health Education Canada has excellent resources that can help educators and those who have the opportunity to lead programming to build quality programs that benefit physical and health education for everyone in healthy learning environments, ensuring that every child and youth has the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to lead resilient, active, and healthy lives.

BC Wheelchair Basketball provides resources and lays out the importance of Physical Literacy to children with a disability. These resources introduce a wide range of physical activities and modified games for wheelchair sport.

Sport can enrich the lives of individuals with intellectual disabilities. Special Olympics BC has provided significant resources through its Fit Families & Friends program to encourage athletes and supporters to stay active together through week-by-week program guides.

The Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology promotes and provides resources on integrating physical activity into the lives of individuals of all ages by providing clear direction on what a healthy 24 hours looks like for Canadians aged 0 – 65+ years.
