‘Olympic Mondays’ give children and youth the opportunity to try various Olympic winter sports
Dec 07, 2015
For the second year, Whistler Sport Legacies is offering ‘Olympic Mondays’, a multi-sport program that introduces children and youth to multiple Olympic winter sports in January and February 2016.
Biathlon, luge, snowboard, downhill/freestyle ski, cross-country skiing and ski jumping are on the schedule in six full-day Monday sessions (January 11, 18, 25, February 1, 15, 22 from 8:30am – 3:00pm). The program is tailored for girls and boys between 9 and 12 years, and participants should have at least intermediate alpine, snowboard or cross-country ski skills when signing up.
The program costs $240 (plus tax) for all six sessions; which includes ski/trail tickets, instruction, and specialized equipment rental for all disciplines. Participants must bring their own CSA approved helmet and can, if available, bring their own gear for the activities. A special program perk is offered by Whistler Olympic Park, where participants qualify for the subsidized ‘Sport Youth Season Pass’ for only $25 (regular youth season pass rate $180), so if they enjoy Nordic skiing they can come back and work on their cross-country, biathlon, or jumping skills (specialized Nordic programs are available). The Olympic Mondays program is also supported by Whistler Blackcomb.
Lucinda Jagger, Whistler Sport Legacies’ Vice President, Sport, is excited about the program:
“It’s a great concept to introduce young participants to various winter sports. Kids aged 9-12 years should practice multiple sports instead of specializing in only one. Sport diversification improves overall physical literacy, helps develop better skills and confidence, and it can even prevent injuries. Plus it’s just more fun to try out new things.”
