PacificSport Vancouver Island re-connects 35 children to the magic of the outdoors

Apr 13, 2016

Last month, PacificSport Vancouver Island witnessed the magical powers of the outdoors when they took 35 local students up Mount Washington for a day of fresh-air fun. The children took part in a number of activities including ski and snowboard lessons, outdoor games and lessons in survival skills.

“The whole experience was really quite moving” says Drew Cooper, PacificSport Vancouver Island General Manager. “There is something remarkable that happens when kids get out of their day-to-day environments and into the woods. We really do marvel at the overall calming effect these types of programs can have.”

This is the second year PacificSport Vancouver Island has offered this program—called The After School Sports and Art Initiative (ASSAI)—and they have experienced overwhelming support from the community, schools and parents.

“We had 100% positive feedback from parents and an equally positive response from the kids who participated” says Cooper. “We are really excited to build and grow the enthusiasm for our community and school programs, like the ASSAI.”

The ASSAI aims to help students, who may face barriers to physical activity participation, develop skills that contribute to a healthy life through physical activity and creative thinking. Activities aim to teach children fundamental movement skills as well as sport competences designed to build their abilities, confidence and connection to community.
