viaSport View: February 2024

Jan 24, 2024

Check out the February edition of the viaSport View, our monthly video series where we share the latest sport sector scoop. This month, Kevin Yu, Business Analyst at viaSport British Columbia, shares what’s happening in the sport community in February.

Black History Month

February is Black History Month. Every day, Black people and communities significantly contribute to sport in British Columbia. This month, we celebrate their achievements, honour their sport experiences, and renew our commitment to creating a more inclusive sport culture in BC.

We are acknowledging this month by amplifying the voices of Black sport community members on our social media channels and website. Take the opportunity this Black History Month to learn more about Black sport role models in our shared history and how we can work together so that everyone feels a strong sense of belonging in sport.

Pink Shirt Day

National Pink Shirt Day is on February 28. This is when individuals wear pink shirts to signify their stance against bullying.

Sport can improve self-esteem and develop a sense of belonging, but only if it is psychologically safe and free of maltreatment. Creating a sport culture that is safe and inclusive is incredibly important to us at viaSport BC.

Follow us closely on our social media channels and website on February 28 as we will be sharing resources on how we can create a positive and harassment-free sport environment.

Right to Be Bystander Intervention Training

We all have a responsibility to do something when we see maltreatment happening, but too often, we freeze. Bystander intervention gives us the tools to intervene without compromising our safety.

Join us for the last in this series of Bystander Intervention Training on February 7 from 7 to 8:30 pm to learn practical and safe techniques to stand up for others! We’ve partnered with Right to Be to customize their Bystander Intervention in Sport course to give participants the tools to intervene the next time they witness harmful behaviour in the sport community. These sessions are for everyone – sign up today!
